Me running at a shoot I did recently =)
Yesterday I went to the gym to train delts and do some cardio. I’ve actually never been to this gym on the weekend, because I usually take a day off and the other day I train at home or outside. There was something interesting (and slightly saddening) that I noticed and thought was worth mentioning!
So the gym I go to is relatively small.. it’s split into a few very simple parts. When you first walk in, the cardio machines are all directly to your left.. and the weights are back a little bit and to your right. Straight ahead and around the corner, are a couple rooms for classes like pilates, yoga, zumba & spin. Well what I found interesting/saddening.. was that there was an EXTREMELY noticeable gender divide. On the left among the cardio, was almost solely women. On the right, was solely men. When I walked into the weight room, the guys stared at me like I was an alien for a good while until they finally acclimated to a female on that side of the room.
It’s a bummer to see that so many women have yet to discover the benefits of weight training. While I realize some of them may in fact weight-lift and are simply doing cardio that day, it’s still a reflection of the messages we’ve all been given for so long. I remember the days where I was afraid to lift weights, for fear of bulking up. I’m so glad I got over that fear and found the courage to pick up those dumbbells! As you all know by now, I’m definitely an advocate of the weights! They’ve changed my physique WAY MORE than cardio ever could. Along with clean eating, weight training gave me curves in all the places I always wished I had them and helped me drop that annoying belly pooch, muffin top and cellulite. They didn’t turn me into some hulking man and they didn’t make me bulky. I’m smaller now than I’ve ever been, yet I don’t look “skinny”.
I know a lot of you have begun weight lifting and many of you have told me how much of a difference you have already noticed! Those updates make me SO HAPPY! I’m so glad you girls (and guys) are beginning to realize what I did a year ago… that weights can change your life! =D
